This is what I saw when people all over social networking sites (Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, etc) were going apeshit over the release of those damn shoes. Shoes that cost roughly about $175-180. Probably more after retail, when people try to sell it. Shoes that (knowing Nike’s production processes) were probably made with poverty-stricken hands and underpaid labor. It was disgusting, watching the chaos unfold and seeing how desperate people were becoming over material things.
I’m still bothered. I woke up this morning genuinely bothered about it. People have placed value on something lifeless. Consumption has us placing value on social constructs and reputation, rather than the social conditions around the world and around us. The material possessions that folks are desperately fighting (literally, violence erupts out of these things a little too often) for is controlling moral and ethical values, and people have no idea how much their things are controlling them. At a time when it’s integral that we build relationships, we’re instead building our bank accounts and our luxury items.
I’m so…upset.
